The Nation’s No. 1 Recruit Is Coming Back to Rocky Top

September could become an important month for Kim Caldwell’s next recruiting class, and the biggest name on Tennessee’s board will eventually make her way to Rocky Top.

Kaleena Smith, the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect in the 2027 class according to 247Sports, has scheduled an official visit to Tennessee for Sept. 25. The 5-foot-6 point guard from Ontario Christian in California is working through an ambitious list of 11 official visits, with Tennessee joining programs including UConn, USC, UCLA, Baylor and Oklahoma in pursuit of one of the country’s most coveted players.

Smith won’t be seeing Knoxville for the first time. She took an unofficial visit to Tennessee last October, giving Caldwell and her staff an existing foundation to build on when she returns later this month. Tennessee currently has no commitments in its 2027 class.

It’s easy to understand why Smith sits at the top of recruiting boards.

She averaged 31.5 points, 6.9 assists, 4.5 steals and 3.7 rebounds last season at Ontario Christian, numbers that illustrate considerably more than scoring ability. She’s a point guard capable of taking over offensively without abandoning the responsibility of creating opportunities for everybody else.

That’s precisely what has impressed 247Sports women’s basketball scouting director Brandon Clay.

“Her ability to pick her spots to score or distribute does not go unnoticed by her teammates.”

Clay also highlighted something that would translate nicely to Caldwell’s preferred style of basketball.

“She has legitimate shooting range out past the 25-foot mark.”

Smith’s recruitment also carries an intriguing Tennessee connection that didn’t exist when Caldwell first arrived in Knoxville.

Tennessee officially returned to adidas on July 1 under a new 10-year partnership. Smith became adidas’ first high school women’s basketball NIL athlete in 2024—and, notably, she was the first signing made under Lady Vol legend Candace Parker after Parker became president of adidas Women’s Basketball.

Parker was effusive about Smith when adidas announced the relationship.

“When I think about the future of women’s basketball, it’s clear it’s in good hands with hoopers like Kaleena.”

That connection shouldn’t be confused with evidence that Tennessee leads Smith’s recruitment. With 11 official visits scheduled, Smith is clearly conducting a broad evaluation of the country’s elite programs, and there is plenty of competition ahead for Caldwell and her staff.

But Tennessee has something meaningful to sell beyond history.

Caldwell is attempting to build a modern version of Lady Vol basketball around pressure, pace and depth. An elite point guard who can create for teammates, generate steals and threaten defenses from well beyond the three-point line certainly fits that blueprint.

And on Sept. 25, Caldwell gets the opportunity to make that case in person.

For a 2027 Tennessee class still waiting on its first commitment, September won’t provide all the answers. But getting the nation’s No. 1 prospect back to Knoxville gives the Lady Vols one very important opportunity to start finding them.
